Treeapp launches in The Philippines: mangroves, islands, and a mission for a greener future

Our News 18 August 2025

Treeapp is setting down roots in a new corner of the world, The Philippines.

A breathtaking 7,641 islands, fringed by over 36,000km of coastline and home to some of the planet’s most extraordinary wildlife. Our newest planting site lies on the east coast of Mindanao, in the coastal town of Baganga, where thriving shorelines aren’t just beautiful- they’re essential.

In partnership with our local planting team, we’re working to restore degraded coastlines, create safe havens for wildlife and strengthen the livelihoods of local communities. Together, we’re building resilience for nature, for people, and for the future.

Planting mangroves where it matters most

Mangroves are nature’s quiet superheroes. They’re trees that breathe underwater, filter salt, strengthen coastlines against storms and store vast amounts of carbon. They provide homes to countless crabs, mussels, turtles, and sea creatures that fuel local fisheries.

Yet these remarkable forests are disappearing fast, threatened by aquaculture, land conversion, and pollution. By working hand in hand with local communities and conservation experts, we’re restoring these ecosystems and giving nature the support it needs to recover, flourish, and protect life for generations to come.

How we plant: from nursery to a new forest

Every mangrove starts as a propagule, a small, pod-like seed dropped by a mature tree. Left to nature alone, only about 3% survive. But in the care of local nurseries, that survival rate soars to over 80%. Here, each seedling is nurtured until it’s strong enough to face the elements. Ready to adapt to salty tides, filter seawater, and conserve precious moisture with its waxy leaves.

When the time comes, the young trees are planted by hand, sometimes at low tide, often by members of the local communities working side by side. Together, they’re not just planting trees, but shaping the future of their coastline for generations to come.

The ripple effect

Mangrove restoration doesn’t just heal coastlines, it transforms lives. Healthy, thriving mangroves mean richer fisheries, fresh economic opportunities, and the power for communities to protect their heritage for generations to come.

And with every mangrove planted through Treeapp, we take another step in the fight against climate change. Locking away carbon, strengthening shorelines, and shielding these islands from erosion and rising seas.

A collaboration rooted in science and community

In partnership with world-class organisations like Davao Oriental State University, part of the Integrated Coastal Resource Management Project (ICRMP), Treeapp’s work in the Philippines is built on a foundation of science and powered by people. University researchers assess each site’s ecological potential before planting has even begun and guide the best planting practices, ensuring every seedling has the best possible chance to thrive.

What makes this project truly special is its human heartbeat:

Local employment - Planting creates jobs for fishermen, womens groups and local schools, providing sustainable income and new opportunities.

Communal Stewardship - Outplanting and monitoring are shared efforts, blending traditional knowledge with modern conservation techniques.

Education - Children learn that protecting mangroves is protecting their own future.

Plastic Upcycling - For every 30kg of plastic waste collected from planting sites, sturdy new school chairs are made, turning pollution into something that benefits the community.

Together, science and community are restoring not just mangroves, but livelihoods, traditions, and hope for the future.
